It’s British
Literature!
This
course is a literature course aimed at upper classmen in high school and will
focus on understanding the British culture through reading its prose and
poetry. The curriculum is arranged
loosely in a chronological fashion, but with a few twists.
Gaining
a clear understanding of the United Kingdom’s geography, history and culture is
the first unit of the course. The first
unit is a look the early Britons and Romans followed by a study of Beowulf and
King Arthur. Shakespeare will
follow—including a look at who the Bard truly was, his time period and culture
and two of his plays (Macbeth, a
tragedy, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream,
a comedy). Discovering Mr. Darcy’s true
nature and what it was like to be a female during Regency era is part of the Pride and Prejudice novel unit. Students will dabble in the Victorian and
Edwardian Eras, again gaining information about England and its culture during
these interconnecting time periods—also reading a collection of short stories
featuring Sherlock Holmes. Five Red Herrings by Dorothy Sayers is a
mystery novel featuring sleuth Lord Peter Whimsy and is set in Scotland (with
lots of broad Scottish brogues)—this is a fun mystery that also gives some
vital insights to the British hierarchy.
And
now for something completely different--other areas of vital study will British
vocabulary and popular culture. Students
also will need to read at least 2 novels of their choice (by British authors,
of course!) and complete a writing assignment for each.
